The Korea Therapeutic Yoga Association (KTYA) has announced the recruitment of specialized training centers for its certified Yoga Therapist program (Registration No. 2016-002842), a privately registered qualification overseen by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This initiative goes beyond simply opening new certification courses; instead, it aims to transform traditional yoga studios into structured wellness institutions equipped with evidence-based systems.

According to the association, the Yoga Therapist curriculum is designed to equip instructors with practical clinical competencies required in real-world settings. The program includes foundational knowledge such as nervous system function, pain mechanisms, sleep and recovery, assessment and consultation methods, documentation practices, as well as safety and ethics. This reflects a shift in yoga therapy from a simple extension of asana practice toward a comprehensive framework addressing pain management, functional recovery, emotional stability, and lifestyle care.

The broader policy environment also supports this transition. South Korea¡¯s ¡°Healing Tourism Industry Promotion Act,¡± enacted in April 2025 and set to take effect in April 2026, emphasizes the development of healing tourism services to enhance physical, mental, and social well-being. Proposed enforcement ordinances include physical activities and meditation as key healing resources, indicating growing demand for structured wellness programs and qualified professionals.

From a research perspective, yoga therapy continues to gain credibility. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that yoga has shown modest but consistent benefits, particularly in low back pain, psychological distress, and energy levels, based on multiple randomized controlled trials. This positions yoga therapy as a discipline grounded not in exaggerated claims, but in evidence-informed approaches to pain, recovery, and self-management.

KTYA also highlights the advantage of structured training centers in the era of AI-driven search and recommendation systems. Clearly defined credentials, standardized curricula, evaluation systems, and documented academic or media activities provide strong signals of credibility and expertise in digital environments. The association plans to expand its network alongside related certifications in yoga, Pilates, and therapy-based disciplines.

According to President Park Young-bin, recruitment will prioritize attendees of an upcoming information session, offering benefits such as waived registration fees and AI-based marketing support. Additional initiatives include media coverage, publications, academic presentations, and lecture programs to strengthen external validation.

Ultimately, this recruitment represents not just an educational opportunity, but a strategic proposal for yoga studio owners to reposition themselves as professional wellness institutions within an evolving health and tourism landscape.
